Should I consider a fireplace insert or a wood stove to install into an existing fireplace?

When a fireplace insert is used you are essentially able to channel more heat into the room instead of losing it up the chimney. Also it does not intrude into the room and you are using the existing space while keeping the general appearance of a fireplace. If you install a free-standing woodstove more floor space is used. Also you lose the fireplace ambiance and cannot use the woodstove top as a warming appliance or as a place to set a steamer.
